Knives Out (2019)

"A case with a hole in the middle"

Sheldon Corcoran November 24, 2019
I got a chance to watch Knives Out at an early screening this week. And I am so glad I was able to go, because it was one of the best movies I've seen this year. (And that's without my bias towards coming-of-age stories)   Rian Johnson writes and directs this movie, and it's such a great job from him all around. You can tell this was written the way good mysteries are supposed to be written - backwards. There are so many good twists and...Read More

Jojo Rabbit (2019)

"Dancing is for people who are free"

Sheldon Corcoran November 23, 2019
Jojo Rabbit is one of the best coming of age stories I've seen in a while. It's clever, it's full of heart, and it's absolutely hilarious. The movie follows a young boy who wants to be a Nazi. His life gets turned upside when he discovers that his mom is secretly housing a Jewish girl. Jojo had to confront this reality, and himself. But don't worry. He has the help of his imaginary best friend - Hitler. Everyone in this movie gives an...Read More

The Lighthouse (2019)

"Why'd you spill yer beans??"

Sheldon Corcoran November 17, 2019
The Lighthouse is not your typical movie. For one thing, it was filmed on 80 year old lenses, and shot in black and white. Also, the aspect ratio is something you'd expect on square TVs rather than in a modern movie theater or widescreen TV. But all of these things add, not subtract from the movie. They help place you into the environment that our two characters are in. It boxes you into the movie, in the same way these characters are boxed...Read More

Jexi (2019)

"Phones Are Bad!"

Sheldon Corcoran November 17, 2019
Jexi follows a man (Phil) who has social anxiety. He's got a decent job, but doesn't have a girlfriend or many friends in general. All that changes when he gets a new phone.   His phone comes with a digital assistant, similar to Siri. Except this assistant has a bit of sass to it. At times, the assistant will insult him, or do things for him without asking. All in all, it's definitely a YouTube-level gag. It's funny at times. But the...Read More

Gemini Man (2019)

Spend less money on Will Smith and more on the script?

Sheldon Corcoran November 17, 2019
Gemini Man is the result of "sunk cost fallacy". The movie concept was originally pitched to Disney back in 1997. When you're sitting on a movie for that long, it's generally a bad sign. Especially when it's essentially just your standard action movie.   Gemini Man does very little interesting outside of the technology behind the movie. The CGI "young Will Smith" looks pretty good - except during bright scenes. The movie makes up for...Read More
